Our speaker, Barry O’Connell, is one of the most prolific and authoritative voices in the internet rug world.  His website, Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs the O’Connell Notes, at www.spongobongo.com is an exhaustive encyclopedia and shopping guide for anyone interested in antique rugs and the dealers who sell them.  He will be speaking to us about the identifying features of Armenian weaving, illustrating his talk with examples.  In addition to www.spongobongo.com, Barry O’Connell is the author of Notes on Oriental Rugs and Persian Rugs by Barry O'Connell (www.persiancarpetguide.com) as well as numerous other articles, websites, and newsgroups. He also helped Harold Kashishian write the website www.hadjin.com.

 

This meeting is presented in conjunction with the Armenian Rug Society and Emmanuel’s Rug and Upholster Cleaners as part of Emmanuel’s 100th year anniversary celebration.  Emmanuel’s was founded in Seattle in 1907 by John Manoug Emmanuelian an Armenian emigrant from Aghin, a village in central Turkey. He originally came to New York in 1904 and worked there for Donjian Inc., one of the largest rug importers at that time. John started out in Seattle selling rugs door to door from the street car, and eventually opening a showroom in downtown Seattle at the corner of Fourth and University in the Stimson Building. The original cleaning plant was at 104 W. Roy St.

5:00             Mix and mingle.  Exhibition of Armenian Rugs.

6:00             Barry O’Connell – Armenian Rugs

7:00             Show and tell – Please bring anything you’d like to share whether rug or other textile of the area. Something Armenian, Kazak, Shirvan or Karabaugh would be appropriate.

Emmanuel’s Rug & Upholstery Cleaners is located at 1105 Rainier Ave So. , Seattle WA 98144. Free off street parking is available in their lot and at nearby businesses. 206-322-2200.

 

From I-5 North:

 

Take the I-90 E/ Dearborn St. / Airport Way exit – EXIT 164 – toward Bellevue/ Spokane/ 4th Ave So.Take the Dearborn St. exit, turn LEFT on So. Dearborn St.

Turn RIGHT onto Rainier Ave So. Go exactly 2 blocks to Norman St and turn RIGHT into the lot.

 

From I-5 South:

 

Merge onto I-90 via EXIT 164A toward Spokane

Take the Rainier Ave So exit – EXIT 3

Turn LEFT onto Rainier Ave So, turn Left into the lot.
