The Henry Art Gallery
Tapestry is one of the most
ancient textile techniques, but it is also a fruitful medium for contemporary
artists. In this presentation, we will
hear from four local artists who work in tapestry. They will present their work using slides as well as actual
pieces from their personal collections.
They are all members of Tapestry Artists of Puget Sound (TAPS), a group
of eleven members founded in 1990 to support the exchange of ideas and
techniques around the subject of tapestry weaving. TAPS has sponsored numerous exhibitions in the Puget Sound area,
and are currently planning a juried exhibition for late 2006. Our presenters for the evening are Mary
Lane, Joyce Hayes, Inge Norgaard, and Carolyn Price Dyer.
About the artists:
MARY LANE is an artist and
art historian. She began weaving
tapestry in 1976 and in 1982 became a founding member of the Scheuer Tapestry
Studio in New York City. Her tapestries
have been published, exhibited and collected internationally.
JOYCE HAYES received her BFA
from Miami University of Ohio in printing and design. She has been a textile practitioner for 28 years and has spent
the last eight years concentrating on tapestry.
INGE NORGAARD was born and
educated in Denmark. She has been a
professional weaver for almost thirty years.
Her work has been exhibited in Europe, China, West Indies, Canada and
USA.
CAROLYN PRICE
DYER is a Seattle native, educated at the UW and Mills College. In her long career as an artist she has used
fiber, including papers, as her art medium, weaving variations of tapestry as
well as plain weave in work inspired by nature.
