Pioneer Hall
In the Madison
Park neighborhood
Ann Nicholas and
Richard Blumenthal are long-time members of the New England Rug Society and
recently-retired biochemists. They have
collected small South Persian tribal weavings for about eighteen years. As their collection grew, so did their
curiosity about the weavers and their nomadic life. This led them to expand their collecting
interest to include photographs of nomadic life. Their interests in photographs and woven
objects reinforce each other. Studying
the photographs provides a richer cultural context for appreciating the
weavings, and studying the weavings helps imbue the photographs with life.
Ann Nicholas and
Richard Blumenthal will start their program by showing photographs and bags
from their collection, focusing on a discussion of how weavings are an
indispensable part of nomadic life. The
second part of their talk will discuss the social and economic conditions that
were prevalent in mid-nineteenth century
