The
Burke Room, The Burke Museum
University of Washington Campus
Embroideries from
Uzbekistan are renowned for their beauty and workmanship, and are very popular
with collectors. Our speaker, Natalia
Nekrassova, from the Textile Museum of Canada, will present a lecture that
features many fine examples from this tradition, ranging from large suzani wall
hangings to smaller tribal bags and decorations.
She will talk about the
old traditions of Central Asian embroidery, including how to distinguish the
work of different Uzbek sub-groups. By
analyzing variations in style, differences in materials, stitching, color and
composition, she will show how to determine which part of the Uzbek tradition a
piece comes from.
Natalia Nekrassova is the
Oriental carpets and textiles curator at the Textile Museum of Canada. During
her two years in this museum she has curated several exhibitions such as
"Out Of This World: Textiles From the Spirit Realm", "Living in
Afghanistan", "Silk Road", "Tibetan Textile",
"Wrapped in Silk – Embroidered Shawls from Pakistan" and "All
the Beauty of the World: Rugs from the Caucasus". The three latter shows
are on view now. Ms. Nekrassova also
recently lectured on Saryk weavings at the American Conference on Oriental Rugs
in Seattle.
Before she came to Canada
from Russia, Ms. Nekrassova worked in the State Museum of Oriental Art in
Moscow for more than 20 years. She was a rug and decorative art curator and the
head of the Central Asian and Caucasian department. She has traveled
extensively in Central Asia and the Caucasus for field research and to purchase
artifacts for the museum collection.
