The
Burke Room, The Burke Museum
University of Washington Campus
The Karakalpak people are
a semi-nomadic, Turkic-speaking tribe from around the southern end of the Aral
Sea in Uzbekistan. Their textile folk
art forms a distinct thread in the larger fabric of the Central Asian textile
tradition. The Savitsky Museum in
Nukus, Uzbekistan, has the world’s most comprehensive collection of Karakalpak
textile art. Marinika Babanazarova is
the director of the Savitsky Museum, and she will present a slide lecture on
these pieces, and the traditional life of the Karakalpak people. In particular, she will talk about the
costumes and jewelry used in Karakalpak wedding ceremonies, as well as the rugs
and textiles used to furnish and decorate the yurt.
Marinika Babanazarova
received her degree in Art History from the Tashkent Art Institute in 1990. In her career at the Savitsky museum, she has
been involved in the presentation of more than 20 exhibitions, including shows
in France, Germany, and around the former Soviet Union. Marinika Babanazarova has studied at the
Louvre and the British Museum, and participated in numerous international
conferences on the cultural and artistic traditions of Central Asia. She has served on the boards of several
non-governmental organizations involved in the preservation and study of
Karakalpak culture. She was also a
member of the Karakalpak parliament from 1995-1999, and is a member of the
Central Elections committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
