The
Seattle Art Museum
Downtown, First and University
The Seattle Art Museum
currently features a display of traditional Mexican textiles and folk-craft
from the collection of STARS member Leslie Grace. The exhibition, which runs through April 27th,
includes 63 textiles and masks collected over the past 36 years on Leslie’s
many trips to study and teach in Mexico.
“The exhibition displays traditional
textiles and garments next to collections of ceremonial masks from various
indigenous communities which live in the vast territories of Mexico, from the
Sonora Desert to the mountains of the Chiapas.
It presents objects that have different functions, from those with
simple everyday uses to those with decorative or ceremonial purposes, but which
nevertheless remain closely connected to daily life and specific rituals based
on the calendar. Garments, richly
ornamented and often extremely complicated, document the importance of costume
in the affirmation of one’s social standing and rank.” – Ghereh 31
For our meeting, Leslie
will provide a walk-through of the exhibition and then we will gather for a
no-host lunch in the Museum dining room.
Leslie’s fascination with
the textile traditions of Latin America began in the 1960s with trips to
Guatemala, the Caribbean, and central and southern Mexico. Since that time, she has also traveled to
and studied the textile traditions of West Africa, Japan, Afghanistan,
Southeast Asia and parts of the Middle East.
She is the founder of La Tienda Folk Art Gallery, and active as a
curator, consultant and teacher.
